I have a question that I would welcome all viewers to respond to. What is the best motor to build with the use of the Holley 350cfm carb.? Many engine builders are saying that a good ole 355 is the best due to it's being efficant. However, there are a lot of guys having a great deal of success with "big" motors. (383,377,406 and so on). I'd like to know too! I have plans to build a couple motors this year, and I'd like to know what to build. How about some specs, or some guidlines that you use to determine what parts you'll put in your motor. When you have to "sell" your motor for the claim price in any sanction, one has to be very carefull about the money spent. Thanks all, and I look forward to your replies!

believe it depends on the size of the track you are gonna race

Really depends on desired RPM at its highest, for CFM math its pretty simple..... C.I.D. and V.E.%.....for example..355 X 6500=2307500 / 3456 x 90% = 600 CFM, so you are looking at something interesting if you have 350 CFM carb..... whats the numbers of the holley and I will tell you more about it... just seems odd being 350cfm.. if it is, a 283 turning 5000 would be close

That is an intresting way to look at that. I have a couple CAD engine designs, and they all point to what you are saying. It does seem that the V.E. is greater on the smaller motors. We've tried 355's and seems like we have to gear them taller to run with the big motors. It would almost seem that in the "stock car game" that torque is more valuable than horsepower. The big 400+ cid motors don't need to turn the rpm's, and are hell to run against with small motors. Maybe there is no replacement for displacement, even with a 350 cfm carb?!?! This has always been a question in the back of my mind.
We have a 327 we want to try for next year. But, can a 327 run with a 434 on a 1/2 mile track? Guess we'll just have to see!
Thanks, Brian

what weight rules are you running. my father was a grand national racer back in the 60/70s and won with a 6cyl...my brother runs ascs slighly underpowered, and my mod is an easy 75+ hp under several cars but we both finished in the top 5, remember most short tracks are more turn then straight, small drag races dont win the race. perpetual motion my brother of speed.

Most of the time I feel like our car is handling awsome. We run mostly 1/2 mile clay out here. Three that we run are like paperclips. Long backstretchs. It seems I can pull up beside these guys in the corners, and then I get pulled big time on the big end. I hate to get whooped when I feel I have a better handling car. Dunno, just have to keep trying!!
